Building a SaaS portfolio as a solo founder with zero VC

No team, no investors, no road map slides. Here's the daily reality.

Why solo

I tried building with co-founders twice before. Both times the disagreement was on pace, not direction. I wanted to ship daily. They wanted to "build the platform properly" for 6 months before launching anything. Both attempts died at month 4.

Solo means decisions take 30 seconds. Ship today, fix tomorrow. No standup. No alignment meeting.

Why no VC (yet)

Two reasons: 1. Pakistani market doesn't have enough patient capital for vertical SaaS plays. Investors here want food delivery clones at $50M valuations. 2. The unit economics work without VC. SmartRestro broke even at 22 customers. We're 50+ now. Profitable.

If we ever raise, it'll be at Series A from someone who's actually built vertical SaaS. Not because we need to — because the right partner accelerates expansion to MENA + SA.

The daily routine

  • 6:30 AM: read 30 min (industry news, books)
  • 7:00 AM: code 2 hours uninterrupted
  • 9:00 AM: customer support / WhatsApp / calls
  • 12:00 PM: code 3 hours
  • 3:00 PM: customer call or new-feature design
  • 5:00 PM: deploy + monitor
  • 8:00 PM: dinner with family
  • 10:00 PM: read or experimental coding

Weekends: longer customer calls + planning.

Tools that earned their keep

  • **Claude Code** — wrote most of the platform code with me as a pair programmer
  • **MongoDB Atlas** — zero-ops database
  • **LiteSpeed** — fast, free for small VPS, way better than Apache
  • **Resend** — email API that just works
  • **WhatsApp Business** — primary customer support channel

Things I got wrong

  • Spent 2 months on a feature 3 customers asked for that nobody else uses (kitchen display system). Should have validated harder.
  • Underpriced for too long. Bumped from Rs. 3,499 to Rs. 4,999 with zero churn. Could've started higher.
  • Tried building 3 products in parallel for one month. Disaster. Now strictly serial.

What I'd tell my year-ago self

Ship the embarrassing first version. Customers will forgive bugs. They won't forgive missing the moment.
